Our New Beds!!

It all started with an idea.  I found this great blog (check it out by clicking here) and loved her furniture. I saw some great ideas for beds - for the boys.  She makes the plans seem so simple to carry out... one day (this past Sunday to be exact), I showed a few to Jeremy.  He immediately said he wanted to try this one:

We figured out how much money it would cost to build one.  $160.00 ~ He really wanted to just see if he could do it on his own, I told him he should try.  We picked out the Fort Bed - check out her plans by clicking here
A side note - this bed was inspired by a bed at Pottery Barn Teens.  It retails for $799.00, you can check it out on that website by clicking here.
The dimensions she gave made the bed about 73 inches tall.  That was too tall for my comfort, so when Jeremy made the legs, he just made them shorter.
Measuring.
All the wood cut... waiting to be made into a bed.
More meaasuring and cutting.
The first night he ended up working late into the night... I went to bed, but when I got up the next morning, this is what was in our garage!  He was doing SO good... I couldn't believe how great it looked.

I'll tell you a secret ~ but don't tell Jeremy.  I wanted him to try, I was happy he was going to try.  He was so excited to try it.  I secretly was worried.  Hey - these are my (our) kids sleeping on these beds.  I wanted them to be solid, no shaking or wobbily-ness about them.  I was so surprised, they were not only solid, but sturdy.

Monday night was our last night to sleep in our cribs.
Bye-bye cribs... can't believe my babies are in big beds now!
Assembling the first bed in their room.

Waiting... waiting ... waiting

Hagen's bed in place... ready to start second bed (I reminded Jeremy about this time - aren't you glad we don't have quads :-)).

I don't have any pictures of the second assembly because I was busy getting mattresses and sheets.  But when I got home, it was finished!!
I love this shot.  This is after Daddy got both beds done and he was going over the ground rules for the beds.
We started this new thing, anytime we are going over something that we really want them to pay attention to us - we tell them to get knee to knee.  (We touch our knee with theirs.)
Here is Jeremy 'knee to knee' with the boys.
Mason was SO excited to get on his bed.  They both kept repeating, 'My new bed!'  'My new bed!' over and over again.
Grinning from ear to ear.
Daddy got up to test them out - nice and sturdy!!!
With their new Cars sheets.
We had to eat dinner and notice Mason already laying down sucking on his blanket - did not want to get up.  This is also Hagen telling me he did not want to get down.
Mason laying down relaxing on his new bed.

The final stats, these two beds - all materials including the two mattresses cost us LESS than buying one bed.  Crazy!!  But, how cool is it that Jeremy built both of them by himself!  He did such a great job!!

On a side note: we do plan on painting the new beds, the boys will be with grandparents for a few days in July.  We figured that would be a good time to tackle that task.  After we paint, I will post pictures again of the finished product.  Until then, they can sleep on the 'unfinished' beds.

Great work Jeremy. Now grampa doesn't have to make them. He may see how good you did and retire and take a vacation instead of a working vacation. ?But oh wait there is Erin. Ha Ha They really are neat beds. You always have great ideas/\. I would love to see your house one day.

LOVE the beds! We built one of her entertainment centers. She is so talented and her plans are easy to follow. Can't wait to see them all painted! :)

These are AWESOME! We're about to attempt a full-height loft for our 9 year old. Did they come in around your estimate of $160/each? Just trying to get a sense of what to plan in terms of a budget. How long did they take to build (each)?

Great job, your boys are adorable!

Very cool! We are looking at doing a loft bed for our oldest son's b-day (he'll be 6). I am curious, how high did you make them? We are doing one with a full size mattress, and I don't want it too high. We were even toying with putting a slide off the end. :) Thanks for sharing!

As for the height, how much shorter did you go? I'm planning on going at least 6 inches shorter, just wonder how that compares to yours.

"How Preemie Moms Are Chosen" by Erma Bombeck

Did you ever wonder how the mothers of premature babies are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering Earth, selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to take notes in a giant ledger. "Armstrong, Beth, son. Patron Saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity." Finally, he passes a name to an angel and smiles.
"Give her a preemie."
The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."
"Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a premature baby a mother who knows no laughter? That would be cruel."
"But does she have the patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience, or she'll drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it. I watched her today. She has that sense of self and independence so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I am going to give her has a world of it's own. She has to make it live in her world, and that's not going to be easy."
God smiles. "This one is perfect. She has just the right amount of selfishness. "
The angel gasps, "Selfishness! Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she will never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't know it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a spoken word. She will never consider a step ordinary. When her child says momma for the first time, she will be witness to a miracle and know it. I will permit her to see cleary the things that I see - ignorance, cruelty, prejudice - and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side."
"But what about her Patron Saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in the air.
God smiles.
"A mirror will suffice."
