Beach Trail

I found out we have a ‘new’ trail near our house.  It is called the beach trail.  It leads to the beach!  I told the boys and they wanted to go on it – immediately!

After a mile, here is what we saw!

They were SO excited!!!

I love that this in just in our ‘backyard’!  We plan to go back.  The boys want to wear their swim trunks and swim in the water at our beach.  We’ll see…

To the Zoo

I’ve been so behind on blog postings, but after the birthday party at the Zoo, we got admission into the Zoo.  So, Mason and I had a fun day at the Zoo, just the two of us.

Checking out the gorillas.

He loves tigers, wish I had gotten a better picture of him seeing them.  His enthusiasm when he saw them was so fun to watch!

BEAR!  (Looks close, doesn’t he!)

Lion!  We had to get the lion pictures, because Hagen loves lions!

They have an area in the Zoo that you can buy bird feed and feed the birds.  This always seems to be a hit or miss opportunity.  Either the birds have had food shoved at their faces forever and they have no desire to eat anything, or every bird that is hungry has hordes of children shoving their stick of food at the birds mouths and you have to elbow your way into one of the crowds in the hopes that the one hungry bird will start to nibble on your stick food long enough for mom to get a picture.  Such a joyous fun.  And Mason wanted to partake.

We got lucky after a few minutes.

And like always, it was worth it to see his sweet, excited face!

I sent this picture to Jeremy and he thought the bird was sitting right beside him (he couldn’t tell there was a glass between them!).

Our last stop was the cheetah.

I love the days I get one on one time with them.  Mason and me together at the zoo = perfection.

1/3

I read a blog of a mom that has a set of boy quads. They were born in February of the same year as my boys. So, her boys are one month older than my boys.

She said something in one of her posts that hit me – like a ton of bricks. Our boys will be under our roof, in our care, until they are 18. So, if they are 6, 1/3 of their time with us is already gone. Like that. Over, 1/3 of their most precious childhood is over. BAM.

We have only so much of their childhood to teach them, mold them, and shape them. 1/3 of that time is gone, over, done.

It made me start thinking about those times they are playing outside and I want to stay in to get the dishes done or they want to read another book and I tell them it is already past bedtime. 1/3, that’s it.

Now, I’m focused on the other 2/3s. Let’s make this other 2/3s count… This 2/3rds they will certainly remember – the good, the bad, the ugly, all of it.

Birthday Party at the Zoo

Mason was invited to a birthday party at the zoo.  Jeremy stayed home with Hagen and I took Mason.  It was so much fun!!
After pizza, we had the animal presentation.  We got to see 4 animals up close with a great zoo keeper.  Here is our first animal, an alligator.

Next up was an owl.

The opossum

…. And then our favorite… the penguin.  Her name was Domino.  I think Mason wanted so badly to reach out and touch her.  Even though he couldn’t, it was neat how close she let them get to her.  (Mason is in the striped shirt.)

Baseball, Spring 2013

We started baseball shortly after our soccer season started.  So far, we had one hectic day and one day that could have been hectic – but thanks to a rainout, turned out not too bad.

The boys have enjoyed playing a second sport.  Baseball is taking some getting used to, though.  This is the first sport that during batting, everyone looks at them.  I think Hagen really felt the ‘pressure’ while everyone watched.   He is getting used to it.  He is starting to get an awesome throwing arm.  Mason just likes to hit and is proving to be quite the hitter…. if we can just keep his hands out of the dirt when he is in the outfield!

They just look so cute in their baseball uniforms.

I don’t know how we have managed it… but we have been SO lucky with our coaches.  The boys’ baseball coach is great.  His son is also in Hagen’s class.  We have so many dads that get out and help during practice and the games.  It is so awesome.

One of my favorite pictures from their first game.

"How Preemie Moms Are Chosen" by Erma Bombeck

Did you ever wonder how the mothers of premature babies are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering Earth, selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to take notes in a giant ledger. "Armstrong, Beth, son. Patron Saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity." Finally, he passes a name to an angel and smiles.
"Give her a preemie."
The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."
"Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a premature baby a mother who knows no laughter? That would be cruel."
"But does she have the patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience, or she'll drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it. I watched her today. She has that sense of self and independence so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I am going to give her has a world of it's own. She has to make it live in her world, and that's not going to be easy."
God smiles. "This one is perfect. She has just the right amount of selfishness. "
The angel gasps, "Selfishness! Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she will never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't know it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a spoken word. She will never consider a step ordinary. When her child says momma for the first time, she will be witness to a miracle and know it. I will permit her to see cleary the things that I see - ignorance, cruelty, prejudice - and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side."
"But what about her Patron Saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in the air.
God smiles.
"A mirror will suffice."
