Halloween, 2013

Last year I was able to hand the boys clothes and tell them this is what they will be for Halloween.  My favorite Halloween costumes, Halloween 2012:

This year I thought I would ask the boys what they wanted to be.  And, like any 6 year old boy – A ninja!!  Ugh, are you sure??  Yes, yes, yes!  Okay, fine….

Look at our amazing Ninja moves!

The week of Halloween, the boys had a school function (Spooky Skate) that let the boys wear the costumes and skate.  So fun!

We also went to the party of a friends’ daughter (they are middle schoolers’… the boys thought they were SO cool going to a ‘big’ kid party).  Can you spot the boys?

We went trick or treating with our neighbors again.

They got a ridiculously huge amount of candy!

I learned about the Switch Witch this year.  Have you heard of her??  Apparently, you pick out a few pieces of candy that you like and leave all the rest for the Switch Witch… she comes in the night (why do they always come in the night?) and takes the candy.  If you leave enough for her, she will leave you a toy.  So, we tried it… amazingly it worked!!  The Switch Witch took all the candy and left a toy for the boys.  Wow!!

Dallas Cowboys Game

One of my friends has a friend that works for the Dallas Cowboys.  She is able to get seats every now and then.  The last time she got seats, she invited me to come.

We had amazing seats!!  It was so fun!

Awards Ceremony

The boys had a first 6 weeks awards ceremony at school.  I really didn’t get any ‘good’ pictures… but I figured I would share the ones I did get.

Pumpkin Characters

Oh October, what a blur of activities.  We had to pick a book character and use a pumpkin to create the character.

Hagen’s book character was Halee Tosis from Dog Breath.

Mason’s book character was Charlotte from Charlotte's Web.

On Halloween, the boys picked a book character to dress up as for school.  Hagen was Grampa from Grampa’s Teeth.  Mason was a cowboy from the Texas Alphabet.

A Day of Vacation

The boys had a random Monday off, so did I.  We decided to do some team building activities.

We started at the library.  Why not?

photo 1 (12)

Turn around, let me get your picture…  (oh good grief, why do you take so many pictures, Momma?)photo 2 (12)

Take one more, one more… please.

After the library, we decided to go bowling *along with everyone else in our town and surrounding towns*.  So, we had some wait time…. while we waited, the boys patiently waited in the arcade.  They didn’t mind the long wait.

When it was time to bowl, the boys were a little sad to leave the arcade… but they managed.

Hagen won the first game.

Mason won the second game.  *I guess I need to work on my bowling moves.*photo 4 (7)photo 1 (9)

We finished off our team building activities with my favorite ice cream parlor, Marble Slab.  Mmmm.  The boys’ agreed.  It was a great team building day.

Pumpkin Carving

We went to the pumpkin patch in our extremely busy October.  The boys wanted to get through the corn maze.

photo (20)

I was somehow separated from them.  They found their way and then had to come back and rescue me.  I kept going in circles, darn corn maze!

(Hagen was super excited about taking pictures – he said the sun was in his eyes, hence the sunglasses.)

We bought pumpkins at the patch and a day or two later drew our faces on them.

A few days after that, we were able to gut the pumpkins and carve their faces.

See, Hagen, it’s not that bad!

Our finished products (Mason’s is on the left, Hagen’s is on the right – he wanted his pumpkin to have hair).

Homework: What do you want to be?

We had our first 1st grade homework this week.  We survived.  It was a BIG step up from kindergarten homework.

photo (9)photo (10)

Working hard!

photo (11)photo (15)

We had several things, so we split it up over several days.  They will have their first spelling test this morning.  Fingers crossed they both make a 100%.  Last night they took a practice one and both spelled all the words correctly!

photo (13)

One of their assignments is for their Writing Briefcase.  They had to decide what they want to be when they grow up and come up with reasons to support their decision.  I loved them so much I had to scan them in my computer before sending them to school.  (Mason continues to crack me up – a landscaper?)

9 Years

Nine years ago we said, ‘I do.’  What a nine years it has been.  Gran came over, so I could go to dinner with this guy.

What a blessing he has been.  I love you, Jeremy.

Connect Four

We are a ‘game’ family.  I might have said that before.  But the boys love to play games.  This is one of them.

photo (7)

I’m learning Mason has such a perfectionistic personality – I guess that is what it would be – that he doesn’t want to play unless he knows he will win.  But, I have a trick.  And it works every. single. time.

When we play, he will tell me he wants to ‘help’ me play against Hagen.  He will let me make maybe one or two moves and then he will ask if he can do the next one.  After that, he plays himself.  Oh well, that’s one way to get him to play.

"How Preemie Moms Are Chosen" by Erma Bombeck

Did you ever wonder how the mothers of premature babies are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering Earth, selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to take notes in a giant ledger. "Armstrong, Beth, son. Patron Saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity." Finally, he passes a name to an angel and smiles.
"Give her a preemie."
The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."
"Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a premature baby a mother who knows no laughter? That would be cruel."
"But does she have the patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience, or she'll drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it. I watched her today. She has that sense of self and independence so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I am going to give her has a world of it's own. She has to make it live in her world, and that's not going to be easy."
God smiles. "This one is perfect. She has just the right amount of selfishness. "
The angel gasps, "Selfishness! Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she will never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't know it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a spoken word. She will never consider a step ordinary. When her child says momma for the first time, she will be witness to a miracle and know it. I will permit her to see cleary the things that I see - ignorance, cruelty, prejudice - and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side."
"But what about her Patron Saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in the air.
God smiles.
"A mirror will suffice."
